David Assum Obituary

David Paul Assum, 76, passed away peacefully with his wife and daughters by his side, in his home on April 20, 2024 after battling cancer. David lived a full and amazing life. He was known to be the life of the party and bring his jokes and antics to anyone who would listen. His sense of humor and dramatics made everyone laugh.

He was born on February 17,1948, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Paul and Connie Assum (nee Tiernan). David is survived by his wife of 40 years, Penny (nee Rieger) of Cincinnati; his two daughters, Stefanie (Matthew) Dean and Melissa (Eric) Kautz; his three grandsons, Dylan and Lukas Dean and Elias Kautz; his brother, Ron (Sandy) Assum, and his sister Laura (Ron) Dahleen, multiple nieces and nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Connie Assum and his brother James (Terry) Assum. He was known to his close friends as “Dave” or “Dave A”, and to his grandsons lovingly as “Pops”. He loved sitting in his man cave bird watching with all his buddies. David was a proud lifelong resident of Oakley, Ohio.

He graduated from Courter Technical High School in 1966 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April 1967. He served in 5 major campaigns during the Vietnam War, including combat service during the Battle of Khe Sanh in 1968. He rose to the rank of Corporal and received the Purple Heart after sustaining a combat related injury. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1970, but he remained a proud Marine throughout his life. Following his military service, David was employed in the graphic arts industry. One of his greatest passions was playing the drums. He was in multiple bands throughout his life, Whitewater, The Hopheads, Orange Fuzz and many more. He was also involved in the Marine Corps League and Disabled American Veterans service Organizations.

His humorous legacy will be continued by his adored Grandsons. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
